We are constantly engaging with others as part of our need to connect. As essential as this need is to our happiness and stability, we can get swept away by other people and their needs. Whether we are focused on completing a challenging work task to please our superiors or caring for family members, it seems that our needs as an individual are often pushed aside. When we lose ourselves like this, it's impossible to know if we're doing enough to care for our own well-being. Chances are, we're probably not. Here are five tips to ensure that your well-being is looked after so you can be your best self.
1. Find Way To Learn And Laugh
Laughter is absolutely medicine, especially when you’re feeling down. Look after your well-being by giving yourself moments to laugh. Watch a funny movie or video clip, or call a friend who always makes you chuckle.
Creating joy for yourself to care for your emotional well-being is crucial. Create moments of laughter as often as you can. You'll feel better about it!
Additionally, enriching yourself with new learning is also an important part of looking after your well-being. Continue learning new things. Take classes and serve your community by taking CPR training.
2. Take 5-minute Breaks Often
You're juggling work, home life, social life, errands, and other tasks and duties throughout the day. You might feel like you're running on autopilot (or on empty) and have no room to pause for yourself. As much as it feels that way, you have more time in your day than you think. You just need five minutes, and consistency throughout your day to refresh and recharge.
You might not think five minutes is enough time to feel energized or to collect yourself after a stressful moment, but it can be enough if you choose to cherish it. If you believe that those five minutes of bliss will help you, they probably will. Make it your mission to take five-minute breaks in between your daily tasks.
3. Say “No” More Often
People-pleasing is a real problem. Many of us constantly need to take on the asks of others, including our friends and families. Even when we feel inclined to say “no,” something prevents us from standing up for ourselves.
Change your default setting and break the vicious cycle. Say “no” when you need to put yourself first. You will protect your energy and well-being on a deeper level by prioritizing your needs before others.
4. Get Enough Sleep
Sleep is essential. There is no way around it! Get eight hours of sleep, and maybe more if you still feel tired throughout the day on this schedule. Some people need anywhere from 9-12 hours of sleep each night. See what works for you and establish a daily schedule around your sleep habits. Your well-being will always be better if you get enough sleep.
5. Drink Water Throughout The Day
Water is not only essential for hydration but also for mental clarity. When we drink enough water, we fuel our body with hydration on a cellular level which helps our brain function.
Drink multiple glasses of water a day, and ideally more, depending on how much you sweat throughout the day. If you have a daily workout session or spend time in a hot environment, you'll want to drink more water for replenishment.
The Bottom Line
To ensure that your well-being is looked after, prioritize your needs. Self-care is not selfish and putting up boundaries with others is necessary. Take care of your health so your well-being can thrive, and so you can live your best life.
